<image:title>Reducing Traffic - Reducing Traffic</image:title>
<image:caption>Delegate Shetty knows more traffic means less family time, and has been a staunch advocate for numerous efforts to improve traffic congestion throughout our community. Montgomery County’s population is growing exponentially as families continue to choose to move here for our exceptional schools and vibrant community. With this growth in population, Emily believes we need smart transportation policies that prioritize moving people safely and efficiently, regardless of their mode of transport. Emily shares the concerns of many neighbors in D18 regarding Governor Hogan’s plan to expand and privatize the beltway. While initially proposed as an effort to reduce traffic congestion, it will instead be devastating to the many neighborhoods that reside within very close proximity to the beltway, posing substantial environmental and public health threats. Emily believes that a more strategic and environmentally-friendly choice would be to instead invest in reliable public transportation, by providing Metro dedicated funding and adequate oversight to ensure resources are spent wisely. Emily is a strong proponent of the Purple Line which will take cars off the roads, reduce traffic and provide more efficient east-west travel from New Carrollton to Bethesda; however, she believes that during these next several years of construction, elected officials must maintain constant communication with impacted neighborhoods. As your Delegate, Emily has worked closely with the D18 team, our local county council and neighboring districts to uplift the concerns of neighbors and businesses during delayed construction efforts. If reelected, Emily will continue to be a strong voice for the community. Because the most congested arteries in District 18 — Connecticut Ave. (MD 185); University Blvd (MD 193); Georgia Ave. (MD 97) and Wisconsin Ave. (MD 355) – are state roads, state and county transportation policy must work together to prioritize moving people safely whether walking, biking, driving or taking transit. In Annapolis, Emily has worked closely with the D18 team to bring state and local leaders together to meet the needs of our community.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Emily - Meet Emily</image:title>
<image:caption>Elected in 2018, Emily is a progressive Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates, with a strong professional background in public policy and advocacy. She spends her days fighting for patients to get access to needed healthcare, and to help lower the cost of prescription drugs, and her nights organizing neighbors and friends to advocate for policies that impact them at the local, state and federal levels. She is also a mother who believes that every child deserves access to a high-quality education, starting from pre-school. She has passed 19 bills into law since being elected to represent District 18 in the House of Delegates, serves on the House Appropriations Committee as the Chair of the Health and Social Services Subcommittee and a member of the Capital Budget subcommittee, and was nominated by the Speaker and elected by her peers to serve as the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus. Emily Shetty was born in Fairfax, VA to immigrant parents, and was raised by a single mother who was a small business owner. With the inspiration and encouragement of her mother, Emily began serving her community at age nine and received the local United Way’s “Community Hero” award years later in 2001, in recognition for her service to numerous local charities including Big Brothers, Big Sisters; the Arc of High Point (NC); the local public library; Habitat for Humanity; and several others. With a law degree from Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law, Emily has continued serving her community in her professional life as well. She spent several years as Legislative Director to a progressive Democratic Member of Congress, Representative Ed Towns (D-NY), for whom she managed much of his domestic policy portfolio. Emily received the Every Life Foundation Rare Voice award for her work in paving the way for new therapies for rare disease patients. Emily then served as Senior Director of Federal Legislative Affairs for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, where she advocated for cancer patients before Members of Congress and their staff. In that capacity, she engaged grassroots cancer patients and their families, training them on how to lobby Members of Congress to pass critical legislation that increased funding at NIH for pediatric cancer research, and lower the patient out-of-pocket costs for lifesaving medication. Emily and her husband Ash, a recently naturalized citizen, live in Kensington with their elementary-aged son Ayden, who attends Montgomery County Public Schools.</image:caption>

<image:title>Protecting Our Healthcare - Protecting Our Healthcare</image:title>
<image:caption>As a health advocate, Emily fights every day for a fair, equitable healthcare system at the federal level that benefits all patients. Like many in our community, she has struggled to afford medications and access healthcare when needed. As a patient with a chronic autoimmune disorder, Emily is keenly aware of the importance of access to high-quality healthcare, and views universal healthcare as both a policy and moral imperative. If reelected, Delegate Shetty will fight for universal healthcare for all Marylanders, to ensure that every family can afford the healthcare that they need. As your Delegate, Emily has been a leader on expanding access to telehealth at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, led the passage of laws that update our state’s organ donation rules, improved access to healthcare savings accounts and spearheaded legislation that have lowered the out-of-pocket costs patients pay at the pharmacy counter. If re-elected, Emily will work to expand mental health services to young people, improve care coordination among providers to benefit patients, and fight to make our healthcare system more affordable and accessible for all patients.</image:caption>

<image:title>Improving Every School - Improving Every School</image:title>
<image:caption>Delegate Shetty and her husband have made Montgomery County home because we have some of the best schools in the world. As a parent of an elementary-aged child, Emily is passionate about ensuring that Montgomery County’s schools continue to live up to this standard. As your Delegate, Emily was proud to support the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and the Built to Learn Act which together made historic investments in our state’s public school system, bringing hundreds of millions of dollars of needed dollars to our schools, improving accountability, and providing needed capital to bring kids out of portables and into modern, safe classrooms. In addition to supporting these important investments, Emily was the lead sponsor on legislation to protect our most vulnerable youth throughout our state, ensuring that all children have access to quality Child Advocacy Centers, and providing access to free child abuse detection, prevention and reporting trainings. If reelected, Emily will continue to ensure that every Montgomery County student and school have the resources to provide a world-class education to all students.</image:caption>
